Wedding Menswear

There’s more to selecting menswear than meets the eye.

The main aim, of course, is to complement the bride’s wedding gown and the bridesmaids’ outfits, etc. But, whilst it’s undoubtedly ‘ladies first’ where wedding attire is concerned, it’s important not to underestimate the impact that the leading men, if ‘dressed to impress’ can have on the occasion.

Wedding Menswear Explained

Depending on the degree of formality required and whether it’s a traditional or contemporary style wedding, the groom and his male entourage have two broad options where menswear is concerned: the more formal morning suit (also known as top hat and tails) or the simpler lounge suit.

Stylish Menswear

Traditionally, co-ordinating menswear was worn by all male members of the wedding party. But it’s not uncommon, nowadays, to see only the groom, best man, fathers of the bride and groom and the ushers wearing matching wedding attire. Another popular trend is to add a contemporary twist with the best man and/or ushers colour-coordinating with the groom, but with slightly different detail.

• Morning Suit: a three-piece suit comprising of a traditional tailcoat, usually in black or grey; typically worn with a dress shirt or wing collared shirt and cravat; pin-striped trousers (for black tailcoats) or matching plain (for grey tailcoats); complemented by an ornate and colour-coordinating waistcoat. Top hats and tails with lightweight gloves to match are de rigueur for formal weddings; although there’s a growing trend to omit the top hats and gloves in contemporary-style weddings.

• Lounge Suit: a three-piece suit with a single or double breasted jacket and a waistcoat in a colour and fabric which complements the bride’s wedding gown; lounge suits tend to be worn for more informal style weddings.

Budget Wedding Menswear

Ooze sartorial elegance, at a fraction of the cost. If you’re on a tight budget, an increasing number of department stores and high street shops hire out menswear. Look out for special offers and package deals, e.g. hire a fixed number of men’s outfits and get the groom’s outfit free.

Bespoke Wedding Menswear

Made to measure menswear lends an air of exclusivity to any contemporary wedding. From quality, hand-tailored morning suits and waistcoats to individually crafted accessories, e.g. neckties in sumptuous silks, the world’s definitely your oyster if you decide to go down the bespoke wedding menswear route. There’s no better way to achieve that wow factor, while also perfectly complementing the bride’s wedding gown and cutting a dash in the wedding photos!

Top Tip

Attention to detail is vital when organising the men’s wedding outfits. Quality of fabric, jackets a perfect fit, trouser lengths precise and the same trouser-to- shoe length for all the main men, shoes colour-coordinated and of a similar style – all details are important and can make or mar the overall effect.
